Oswego, New York,
the Great City on a Great Lake, has a total population
of 18,096 (2000 Census Report) located in the
Syracuse metro area in Central New York State. The county
seat of
Oswego County.
The Port of Oswego was the first US Port of Call on the Great Lakes.
The Oswego River is
part of the New York State Canal System which connects with the Hudson
River to the south, Lake Ontario to the north, and the Finger Lakes and
Lake Erie to the west.
Besides the port on
Lake Ontario, transportation is fully realized here.
The Oswego County Airport and
Syracuse's Hancock International Airport provide full service
flying and shipping facilities. Connecting highways
provide transportation to every major market area in the U.S. The I-81
and I-90 intersection here allows full north/south and east/west
movement.
The
CSX Rail System is industry friendly and provides daily rail
service.
Oswego is one of
twenty international weigh-in sites for pumpkin growers competing in the
Great Pumpkin Commonwealth (New York, Pennsylvania, and Canada). In
1996, the Commonwealth weighed the first one thousand pound pumpkin
(yes, Virginia - a half ton!). Oswego has grown a 752 pound pumpkin, a
731 pound squash, and a 107 pound watermelon. Pumpkinfest is all about
fun. It features music, crafts, and activities for the whole family.
Not surprisingly,
Oswego's Thursday Farmer's Market is well-attended. Street performers,
jugglers, and musicians stroll downtown Oswego along with tourists and
residents. Baked goods, fresh produce and crafts are always in season.
The annual
Harborfest party features world-famous Grucci fireworks. An estimated
200,000 spectators converge on this Port City every July for this
spectacular entertainment. Racing at Oswego
Speedway, Oswego County Fair, Firemen's Field-Days, Renaissance Faire,
Farmer's Market, Riverfront Concert Series, Breitbeck Concert Series,
Fishing Derby's, and Thunder Island Recreation are just part of
what Oswego offers for attractions and entertainment. Oswego River
tempts anglers with catfish, sheepshead and bass, while Lake Ontario is
noted for salmon.
The economy is
diversified and
Operation Oswego County works closely with the Chamber of
Commerce to ensure a thriving future. Shipments of aluminum, potash,
urea, limestone, salt, cement and petroleum products are handled by the
Port.
In 2003,
the number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI was 45; the
number of murders and homicides was 0. SUNY
(Oswego State University) is well accredited. Oswego is renowned for
its
historic district.
Oswego
