Oswego County, New York rests along
the eastern shore of beautiful Lake Ontario, just
north of Syracuse. Oswego
County derives its name from the Iroquois word meaning "the
outpouring", which refers to the mouth of the Oswego River.
As of the 2000 Census, the communities in Oswego County
reported a combined population of 122,377 residents.
Oswego
and Pulaski both serve as seats of
Oswego County, harboring prosperous industries that
produce aluminum, baked beans, dairy products, frozen vegetables, paper
products, soap and wine. Oswego County boasts a strong economy,
an experienced workforce, and a comprehensive transportation system,
including the Seaway Trail. The Seaway Trail is an alternative to
NY's super highways and modern toll roads, which parallels Lake
Erie, Lake Ontario, Niagara River
and St.
Lawrence River.
Oswego County residents take pride in its public
education program. The City of Oswego is home to the SUNY Oswego,
which serves the entire county. Wide varieties of institutions for higher
learning are within a short drive to nearby Onondaga County. These facilities include Crouse Hospital School of Nursing,
Le Moyne College, SUNY College of
Environmental Science and Forestry, SUNY Upstate Medical University at Syracuse
and Syracuse
University.
Oswego County offers year round activities suitable for the
whole family. Celebrations such as Lake Ontario Bird Festival,
Harborfest, Kites Over Fort Ontario, Oswego
Speedway Classic Weekend and the Great Pumpkin Fest bring the
community together each year. Visitors enjoy historic museums and driving tours
commemorating the Underground
Railroad. Numerous farmers markets spread throughout the countryside
and a variety of developed parks provide recreational activities while
surrounded by the stunning beauty of the area. Enormous salmon
and trout attract fisherman to area
lakes, while hikers, bikers and bird lovers flock to the
shores. In winter, the area is ripe for cross-country skiing,
snowmobiling, snowshoeing, snow tubing, dog sledding, ice-skating and sleigh
riding.
Oswego County provides a natural paradise for the outdoor
enthusiast. Sandy Island
Beach State Park maintains a seventeen-mile shoreline
originating from the Town of Richland and along Lake Ontario into Jefferson County.
Creeks,
ponds, sand dunes, wetlands and woodlands create a specialized
environment ideal for several species of waterfowl and migratory
birds, endangered plants and eight rare animals. Happy Valley Wildlife
Management Area spans 8,645 acres through the towns of Albion,
Amboy, Parish and Williamstown. Marked
and unmarked trails meander through this wildlife habitat, enhanced
by intimate views of the region. Oswego County Nature Park at Camp Zerbe, in
Williamston, reveals three miles of marked nature trails with "kettle
hole" lakes, carved by ancient glaciers that attract a variety of
wildlife into this wilderness area. The western portion of Oswego County also
contains a section of the Tug
Hill Plateau.
Oswego County, New York is
a large community teeming with opportunities for business and
education. With its picturesque landscape and virtually
limitless recreational opportunities, Oswego County is a favorable
location in which to live.
