Manlius, New York, established in
1794, was one of the first eleven towns settled in Onondaga County. Part of Upstate New
York's enchanted Finger
Lakes Region, full of rolling hillsides and glistening waterfalls, Manlius
is also a suburb of the city of Syracuse.
The Census 2000 showed the population of Manlius as being 31,872. The town covers almost fifty
square miles. Included within Manlius
boundaries are several quaint hamlets and three villages, Minoa, Fayetteville and
the charming little Village of
Manlius, population 4,819. These
communities provide Syracuse workers with the option of small-town living while
still within easy commute of the city. Downtown Syracuse lies ten miles from Manlius.
The village of Manlius, NY holds the title of “The Village
of Firsts”. It was the first village
settled in Onondaga County, and had the first historic district, declared in
1973. Manlius residents established the
first newspaper, distillery, gun factory, tannery and pottery in the region,
all before 1810. Townspeople formed the
county’s first fire department in 1813. Manlius was the fastest growing village in New York State during the decade of the
‘60’s. Originally built on the only
east-west turnpike road, Manlius emerged as an important commercial center. Today that road is Route 173, a
major artery entering Syracuse. The
village of Fayetteville grew around the Erie Canal, and like
Manlius, today boasts a delightful National
Historic District.
Manlius attracted settlers due to its rich, fertile soil and
impressive forests. Agriculture remains
an important economic factor. Though
the population doubled between 1960 and 1994, mainly due to a growth spurt
occurring in the Syracuse Metro Area, about half of the Manlius’ land remains
zoned for agriculture. This creates a
delightful rural ambience. Mixed with
the well-preserved architecture from two centuries and charming
scenes like the swans that live in the old millpond in the village square,
Manlius remains a town that pleases all the senses.
Also found within the Manlius town border is the magnificent
Green
Lakes State Park. Two
glacier-formed lakes await boaters, swimmers and fishermen, while hikers
delight in the miles of trails. Winter sportsmen enjoy snowmobiling
here. Rangers discovered large stands
of old
growth trees, close to 800 acres, making this the finest old
growth forest in Central New York. Five other parks
are within a twenty-mile radius, giving Manlius residents plenty of outdoor
activity.
The people of Manlius show a strong interest in
education. With an excellent public
school system in place, students also have nineteen outstanding colleges
and universities within forty miles of home. More than 73% of Manlius residents obtain college degrees. The
median household income proved to be nearly $20,000 higher than the national
average, according to the 2000 Census.
Manlius,
New York offers the best in small community living as well as the best in urban
opportunity. Surrounded by rich fertile farmland, natural beauty, and echoes of a splendid history, Manlius looks
forward to a prosperous future.
