Madison
County, New York pleases the eye with its many acres of rolling hillsides and sparkling lakes. Scattered through this rural area in the
Central Leatherstocking Region of
Upstate New York are forty-nine charming
towns and villages and one city.
Founded in 1806, Madison County’s economy traditionally relied on agriculture. Today, the dairy industry dominates, and Madison County ranks fourth in dairy production for New York State. The horse industry thrives here also, breeding racing as well as pleasure horses. Manufacturing and light industry firms have discovered this lovely region. The low cost of living and land, as well as many state and local
incentives, help attract new businesses. There are six industrial parks spread throughout the towns of
Canastota, Curtin,
Sullivan, Oneida, MidYork and Trush.
Madison County’s population stood at 69,411, according to Census 2000. With an area of 661 square miles, Madison County lies approximately twenty miles from the prosperous cities of
Syracuse and
Utica. The tiny town of
Wamspville serves as the county seat, with a population of 561. The hamlet of
Pratt's Hollow is the geographic center of New York state.
Lovely Oneida Lake borders Madison County to the north. Fourteen other lakes grace the landscape, six of which are man-made, built as reservoirs for the
Erie and
Chenango
Canals. The Oneida Lake Plain was once the bottom of a
glacier lake and today the fertile soil is rich in nutrients. Undulating hills and wide, steep valleys make up the central and southern parts of Madison County. Historic homesteads and quaint villages nestle among the hillsides.
Hunting and fishing opportunities abound in Madison County. The 3,600 acres of the
Tioughnioga Wildlife Management Area attract hunters from all over. Found here are white-tailed deer, grouse, turkey and hare. Northern pike, walleye, bass and trout fill Madison County’s many lakes and streams. Summertime brings
golfers
to the area, while in the winter months, skiers and snowmobilers enjoy Madison County’s scenic terrain.
History buffs and antique collectors know Madison County well. The town of
Bouckville hosts the August Antique Show, one of the largest events of its kind in New York. The
Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum preserves the early canal days of the region. Located in Madison County’s only city,
Oneida, is the
Oneida Community
Mansion. This rambling mansion was the home of the utopian religious commune founded in 1848. The
Oneida Indian Nation uses the city as its headquarters and Native American culture thrives here. The Americana Village in
Hamilton is a must-see for historians, full of artifacts and displays of
New York's early history.
Three colleges serve Madison County residents: Cazenovia
College, Colgate University in Hamilton, and the
Morrisville State
University. The colleges provide a wealth of cultural activities for all the area. Cazenovia’s
Stone Qaurry Hill Art Park is a unique and outstanding display of environmental art. The historic
Earlville Opera House delights patrons with its marvelous ambience and acoustics.
Madison
County, New York provides its residents with natural scenic splendor and strong, tight-knit communities.
