Fayetteville,
New York lies along the banks of Limestone Creek in the
Finger Lakes Region of
Onondaga County. Fayetteville is an eastern suburb of the burgeoning city of
Syracuse, situated within the borders of the town of
Manlius. Incorporated in 1844, Fayetteville's name is in honor of
Marquis de
Lafayette. As of the 2000 U.S. Census, Fayetteville reported a population of
4,190.
Fayetteville and Manlius embody the entrepreneurial spirit of the 1800's. Cyrus Kinne, known for establishing the county's first blacksmith shop, was responsible for settling Fayetteville. Manlius, known as "The Village of Firsts", was the first village settled in Onondaga County. Manlius also established the original fire department, the first newspaper and was the first to have an area of its downtown designated as a
National Historic District. Built on the route of a major highway and along the
Erie Canal, the area eventually became a significant center of commerce. Early industries included
limestone, plaster and sawmills as well as a sash, blind and door factory.
Today, Fayetteville boasts incomes that exceed the national average with a median household income of $50,598 and the median family income reportedly at $66,201. Just over one percent of the population is below poverty level. The crime rate is low and varieties of reasonably priced housing options are available throughout the area. In addition, the level of education is significantly above the national average, with a staggering eighty-one percent of Fayetteville residents, age 25 and older, earning college degrees.
Fayetteville's commitment to education is evident in its top-notch public, private and parochial
schools. Multiple facilities for higher learning are within a forty-minute drive of Fayetteville. These include
Colgate University,
Syracuse University,
Bryant & Stratton
College, SUNY College of Environmental Science and
Forestry, SUNY College at
Oswego, SUNY's Empire State
College, SUNY Upstate Medical
University, LeMoyne College and

College.
