County. The town was established in 1835 after the Erie Canal opened in
1825. Dewitt, NY is named in honor of
Major
Moses DeWitt, a judge in the County Courts, soldier in the Revolutionary War,
and early settler of DeWitt. In 2008, the
Census
Bureau estimated that DeWitt had 24,168 residents living in the town, but
DeWitt is such a hotbed for jobs that the population swells to 43,000 workday residents.
