DeWitt, New York

DeWitt, New York is an eastern suburb of City of Syracuse, NY in Onondaga County. The town was established in 1835 after the Erie Canal opened in 1825. Dewitt, NY is named in honor of Major Moses DeWitt, a judge in the County Courts, soldier in the Revolutionary War, and early settler of DeWitt. In 2008, the Census Bureau estimated that DeWitt had 24,168 residents living in the town, but DeWitt is such a hotbed for jobs that the population swells to 43,000 workday residents.

Routes 481 and 92, Interstate 90, and Interstate 690 serve DeWitt's nine business and industrial parks, and the town's residents. The Hancock International Airport is easily accessible from DeWitt. The major employers in town are Carrier, Bristol Myers Squibb, New Venture Gear, UPS, Time Warner and Verizon.

Residents of DeWitt that have criminal, vehicle and traffic cases, and DWI cases visit Dewitt Town Court at 5400 Butternut Drive in East Syracuse, NY. Court is held on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. The Onondaga County Courthouse at 401 Montgomery St. in Syracuse, NY has jurisdiction over all criminal and some civil cases in the county, but typically only handles cases from DeWitt that are beyond the jurisdiction of the Town Court. In DeWitt, personal injury cases are heard in civil court, at the Town Court or County Court level. Civil cases typically heard by the Supreme Court, also in Syracuse, include general civil claims for more than $25,000. Cases heard by the Onondaga County Commercial Division of the Supreme Court include commercial class actions and certain malpractice cases.

In New York, the typical personal injury case is handled in Civil Court. Lawsuits seeking money damages of more than $25,000 are handled by the Supreme Court. Lawsuits seeking money damages up to $25,000 are handled in County Court. Small Claims (money damages up to $3,000) are handled in village and town courts. One thing DeWitt is not short on is vision. DeWitt officials recently toured the former Alpha Cement property, making plans for the property to be redeveloped. The 120-acre site is next to the Clark Reservation State Park and potential uses include waterfront homes, businesses, and an area for residents to enjoy the pond and wooded areas.
