Chittenango,
New York is a splendid little village found within the town of
Sullivan. Located in the northwest corner of New York’s lovely
Madison
County, Chittenango borders Oneida
Lake. The lake is sometimes referred to as the “thumb” of
Upstate New York's internationally renowned
Finger Lakes
Region.
Chittenango’s most famous resident was L. Frank
Baum, born and raised here. He wrote the magical Wizard of Oz series, first published in 1900. Since 1978, Chittenango honors its favorite son in the annual
Oz Fest held each June. Parades, costume contests, and visits from the surviving original munchkins enliven the town. Chittenango even boasts yellow brick roads for sidewalks, leading to Oz-themed businesses such as Auntie Em’s Pies and Tin Man Construction. The
L Frank Baum Oz Museum remains open year-round.
Chittenango began as an Erie Canal town. Also found here is the
Chittenango Landing Canal boat
Museum. It lies within the boundary of the Old Erie Canal Historic State
Park, which stretches thirty-six miles and winds through several towns. The park gives room for horseback riding and hiking along the towpath, canoeing and fishing in the canal. The museum displays an authentic Erie Canal packet boat and much of the original dry-dock remains.
Census 2000 recorded Chittenango’s population as 4,855. The surrounding town of
Sullivan
reported 14,991. Chittenango houses the town government office and chamber of commerce. All of
Madison
County is experiencing growth as the Syracuse Metropolitan Area expands. The city of
Syracuse lies twelve miles from Chittenango.
Most of Madison County is prime New York dairy farmland. The fertile soil from the
Oneida
Lake Plain supports dairy cows and horses. Industry is slowly making its way into the county. As more people seek to escape the city life, they see communities such as
Chittenango offering the serenity and safety of rural living. Madison County’s fourteen lakes and many acres of hilly, forested public grounds create a natural wonderland and scenic backdrop for its quaint little towns.
Chittenango,
New York, a village full of whimsical charm and Oz-like delight, is a place to remember, “There’s no place like home”.
