Central Square, New
York forms the southeastern border of the town of Hastings in Oswego County. As of the Census 2000
report, Central Square reported 1,646 residents,
while Hastings had just over 8,800.
The appropriately named Central Square lies
at the crossroads between the towns of Constantia and Fulton and
between Syracuse and Watertown. Central
Square has convenient access to the Syracuse
Hancock International Airport, NY
State Thruway, Interstate 81 and the
Seaway Trail. The Seaway Trail is a scenic
alternative to NY's larger freeways and toll roads, and it runs parallel
to Lake Ontario, the St.
Lawrence River, Lake
Erie and the Niagara River.
In the late 1800's through the early 1900's, the Central
Square Station was the primary hub of transportation
and communication in the area. Early Central Square residents relied on
the heavy timber growth that originally covered the town. Residents
converted much of the timber into ashes, turning it into black
salts or potash and sold to those who stopped at the Central Square train
depot. As the years passed, agriculture became the leading
product. Some residents grew corn, fruit, grains and
potatoes, while others focused their attention on dairying and raising
stock. Currently, tobacco is the primary crop, supplemented by other
exported products such as apples, hay, hops and potatoes. However,
since 1860, dairy products have consistently led the industry. Central
Square is home to one of the four local cheese factories. Other major factories
are in Hastings, Mallory, and Caughdenoy.
Central Square is ten miles southeast of Lake
Ontario, twelve miles north of Syracuse and fifty-five miles
west of the spectacular Adirondack Mountains.
Lake
Ontario features enormous salmon and trout that attract fisherman and provides
a myriad outdoor activities. Syracuse shines as the region's
largest metropolis. Known as the "Crossroads of New York
State", Syracuse rests at the intersection of the State's two major highways, Interstate 90 and Interstate 81.
The
Adirondack
State Park spans six million acres of natural splendor with
year round activities that include bird watching, camping, canoeing, fishing, hunting,
skiing, snowmobiling and white water rafting.
Central Square residents enjoy an excellent quality of life. The area experiences four full seasons and has affordable real
estate complemented by a crime rate that rests well below the
national and state average. The Central Square community also prides itself on
its quality public schools and its
State University, SUNY Oswego. SUNY stands for
State University of NY. In nearby Onondaga County, higher
learning facilities include Crouse Hospital School of Nursing,
Le Moyne College, SUNY College of
Environmental Science and Forestry, SUNY Upstate Medical University at Syracuse
and Syracuse
University.
Central Square, New York functions as a suburb of the Syracuse
metro area, while maintaining the slower paced life of a small, yet dynamic
community.
