Cazenovia, New York contains some of the most picturesque landscape in
Madison
County. Established in 1793 on the shores of beautiful Cazenovia
Lake, glorious Greek Revival and Victorian homes abound here.
The town of Cazenovia covers almost 51 square miles. It includes the hamlet of
New
Woodstock and several others, as well as the historic Village of
Cazenovia. This prestigious village sits on the east shore of the lake and on the banks of Chittenango Creek, providing two types of waterfront property. The village is also home to
Cazenovia
College, a lovely campus founded in 1824. Numerous new neighborhoods surround the older sections of Cazenovia, giving the townspeople a wide diversity of housing choices. From elegant 200-year old homes to brand new modern condominiums, Cazenovia has it all. Census 2000 recorded the population as 6,481.
Madison County is the geographic center of
New York
State, making Cazenovia a strategic location for business. The commercial markets of
Toronto,
Pittsburgh,
New York City and
Philadelphia all lie within easy reach. Cazenovia lies only seventeen miles from the vibrant city of Syracuse, a rapidly growing metropolis. The
Syracuse Metropolitan Area extends farther into Madison County each year.
Cazenovia’s economy remains strong and stable. Madison County traditionally relied on agriculture as its economic base, though many new corporations are moving to this scenic, rural area. Six new industrial parks await incoming firms. The strong work ethic of an agricultural labor pool remains a key incentive. Cazenovia residents are some of the highest educated in the county. An astounding 79% of the townspeople obtain their college degrees. Twenty top-notch
college and universities lie within a forty-mile radius. Perhaps because of this high level of education, Census 2000 showed Cazenovia’s median household income to be almost $15,000 higher than the national average. As one of Central New York’s oldest communities, Cazenovia is home to a number of historic sites. The
Lorenzo State Historic
Park, the ‘Jewel of Cazenovia”, overlooks the lake. A neoclassical mansion built in 1807 with stunning grounds, the Lorenzo house hosts many concerts and musical events. The
Lincklaen House is an elegant 1835 hotel that still offers lodging and gourmet dining. Cazenovia boasts three
historic
districts, including the entire inner village. Quaint shops and fine eateries attract many visitors
Cazenovia, New York combines grace and charm to create an outstanding and memorable community. Residents like to tell a
legend that reminds them of their own heritage of ingenuity. Two early settlers, the Bumpus brothers, when attacked by a bear, saved themselves by filling his mouth full of stones, so he could not bite! Cazenovia history lives on.
