Canastota,
New York exhibits the spirit of Yankee ingenuity and a dynamic sense of
community. This small village, located within the town of Lenox, lies near the eastern shore of
Oneida Lake. Part of predominately rural
Madison
County, Canastota is surrounded by the natural scenic beauty of the
Central Leatherstocking Region of
Upstate New
York.
Census 2000 showed Canastota’s population as 4,425 and Lenox’s as 8,665. Situated only twenty miles from the prominent city of
Syracuse, and less than thirty miles from
Utica and
Rome, Canastota residents have ample job opportunities within easy commute. A surprising number of industries thrive right here in the village. The major employers include the
Diemold
Corporation, Queensboro Farm Products and
Owl Wire and
Cable. Three custom tool companies locate out of Canastota, as well as the headquarters for
Nice 'N Easy Convenience Stores and
All Seasons Vending
Services.
The rugged entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well here. A wide variety of small and mid-size businesses thrive in
Canastota. Specialty shops such as
Rick's Rags, founded in 1984, make cleaning rags from recycled materials. It has grown from a tiny operation in a mobile home, to a business now employing sixteen workers. The
Country Artist
sells delightful homemade herbal soaps and sundry. Gourmet restaurants stand alongside mom and pop diners. The
Canastota
Kart Speedway offers loads of family fun with European sprint race karts imported from Belgium.
Canastota, NY's central location provides residents with year-round opportunities for outdoor recreation. Oneida Lake supplies some of the finest fishing around, with walleye, pike, bluegill and perch. The sandy shores of the Sylvan-Verano Beach Resorts are just a few minutes drive from Canastota.
Madison County contains fourteen lakes and numerous rivers and streams. Many acres of land are set aside for public use.
Hunting opportunities abound here, as do
golf
courses. Winter months bring snowmobilers delight, with the many miles of trails up and down the rolling, snow-covered hills.
Also found in Canastota is the International Boxers Hall of
Fame. Two hometown boys became world boxing champions, Carmen Basilio and his nephew,
Billy
Backus. Wanting to honor the Canastotians, the townspeople raised funds for seven years to create the Hall of Fame, completing it in 1989.
Canastota, New York remains a tiny village with a large spirit. The outward growth of the Syracuse Metro Area ensures the prosperous future of Canastota, but the spirit of the people ensures its true success.
